No home for house sparrow

This was the first and only time I've seen a house sparrow at the feeders in Onslow County, and he was quickly run off by a much smaller but very fierce chipping sparrow (last photo). Bless him. I hope he found his way back to his tribe.

Chickweed and deadnettle: Tiny beauties

Among the first tiny wildflowers of spring in NC are common chickweeds (Stellaria media) and henbit deadnettles (Lamium amplexicaule), each with flowers less than half an each wide and both intricate and beautiful when you look at them up close. Although they're sometimes dismissed as "weeds" (I loathe that word), they're actually both edible herbs. (Read more here and here.)

Common dandelion, little sunbursts

The common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is one of the earliest signs of spring. I love to see them pop up in the yard, by the road and everywhere! Some consider them a nuisance, but not me! If you look closely, you'll see that each dandelion looks a bit different from the next and their bright, beautiful yellow faces look like little sunbursts. And of course, when a dandelion turns from flower to fruit (puffball) you can make a wish and blow! :)
